What is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral therapy is now the treatment of choice for many conditions – it is based on research into the body's subtle physiology by osteopaths around 100 years ago. These show that the cerebrospinal fluid, which surrounds the brain and spinal cord, expresses a rhythmic motion called craniosacral motion, from which the bones and organs reflect characteristic patterns of movement. This motion is a natural expression of our life-force.
The craniosacral therapist “listens” with their hands to this motion, at various points in the body, to detect any interferences or weaknesses in its expression. These reveal the “internal picture” of strains or traumas held in the body which restrict its functioning. In this way the physical origin of poor health or unpleasant symptoms may be traced, and rebalancing these rhythms in the body can relieve symptoms and permit return to good health from within. By releasing the body's tensions, the energy being used to maintain them is freed, often resulting in a noticeable increase in energy for the patient.
Can craniosacral therapy help me?
Craniosacral therapy, being so gentle, is safe and suitable for people of all ages, from newborn babies to the elderly, and also in conditions of weakness or acute pain. So it is often appropriate when other therapies may be unsafe, such as during pregnancy, after an operation, accident or injury, when suffering from shock, and of course for babies and children.
For anyone of any age too, this powerful natural technique can be the most appropriate and direct means of restoring health. Sometimes this will involve working quite specifically with tissues such as bones and membranes, and sometimes with aspects of the rhythmic potency of the whole body, raising vitality levels and empowering the body's natural self-healing processes.
These effects of treating the whole body mean that Craniosacral Therapy may be able to help in almost any condition. Many people who have experienced its benefits use craniosacral therapy as a positive force in maintaining their good health – without waiting for illness to strike first. It counters the effects of stress, and gives increased vigour and well-being, a welcome support to most of us!
Babies and children
Many problems of infants can result from craniosacral imbalances during the birth process, for example, colic, sucking difficulties,
The extreme delicacy of craniosacral treatment makes it highly suitable for babies and children. The "natural" trauma of the birth process, especially where there is medical intervention, can have lasting consequences. These may show in newborns as colic, incessant crying, or suckling difficulties. Other signs that all is not well, such as breathing irregularities, restlessness and irritability, poor sleep, or lack of responsiveness can also indicate craniosacral imbalances resulting from birth events. By resolving these, craniosacral therapy allows normal development to proceed. One of the joys of treating babies is that they respond so well to treatment, usually more quickly than adults.
Older infants and children may suffer ear and eye problems, learning difficulties, hyperactivity / Attention Deficit Disorder, asthma or cerebral palsy. Craniosacral Therapy is preferable to drug treatment or surgery, and by dealing with the cause, lays the foundation for future healthy growth and development.

Craniosacral Practitioners at The Holistic Clinic
Kathy Cram D.C., RCST
Kathy has used Craniosacral therapy for many years, treating a wide variety of conditions in babies, children and adults. She is also a Chiropractor, trained in the McTimoney Technique, and a Bowen Therapist. A mother herself, she treats many women in pregnancy, as well as checking or treating newborn infants. An important aspect of her work with children is facilitating their movement through the physical and emotional development stages which comprise childhood.
Five Cram D.C. , RCST, Dip Couns.
Five trained as a Counsellor before becoming a Chiropractor and Craniosacral therapist, and has much experience of dealing with the emotional roots of illness. His perspective is that, just as with stress causing heart attacks, the possibility of an emotional component to disease does not mean the physical aspect is not real! His treatment may include explicit approaches to life-stresses past and present, but with Craniosacral therapy this is usually not necessary, especially with children.
